Beach Holidays in Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo is a small Tanzanian coastal town
bordering the Indian Ocean to the west. Many visitors came here to explore the ancient
historical sites that serve as a testimony to Bagamoyo’s glorious past. Others come
for scuba diving, beach leisure, snorkeling and fishing in Bagamoyo’s waters.
Many modern hotels have been built in Bagamoyo sea side to cater for
the increasing number of visitors
Bagamoyo played various historical roles in Tanzania. Apart from being a slave
and ivory port, it was also a German headquarter in 1891. Explorers such as Burton, Speke,
Grant, Livingston and Stanley all passed in this town. The name Bagamoyo comes from
Swahili words "bwaga moyo" (throw down your heart), a despair expressed by
people who were captured as slaves of knowing that they face a long
uncertain future. Bagamoyo, if accepted as a "World Heritage"
site, would be the seventh such site on UNESCO's World
Heritage list in Tanzania: the four natural sites are
Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti
National Park and Selous Game Reserve; the two cultural sites are Zanzibar Stone Town and Kilwa
Kisiwani/Songo Mnara ruins in Lindi region.
