Udzungwa Mountains
The Udzungwa Mountain National Park, which is 1990 square kilometers, is the
first terrestrial national park in Tanzania. It is well known for its biologically diverse
forest with approximately 20 - 30% out of 200 animals and plant species that grow here
not found anywhere in the world. Still it is really beautiful place for hiking. The
mountain ascends from 300 meters in the great Ruaha river valley in the north
and north east of Tanzania to Luhombero, its highest point at 2,576 meters
above sea level. In between, there are rolling hills, dissected plateau,
waterfalls and an undulating upland blanketed by a thick rain forest
which colors the area with an ethereal beauty.
Udzungwa Mountain National Park offers opportunity for foot walking safari,
especially for naturalists, and hikers. Walking and hiking through dense forest on the steep
slope to the waterfalls while viewing the Kilombero flood plain and being entertained by
endemic primates, butterflies, and birds songs. At a relaxing time walking to the
Ruiper Ranger Post along the Ruiper River, full of water buffalos and hippos,
as well as birds. For that case, Udzungwa mountain National Park is an
ideal place that a person could combine Bird watching, game viewing
through foot walking safari, and mountain hiking.
