Zanzibar Prison Island Tour
Earning its name as a former prison for slaves and a quarantine station for
Zanzibar and the mainland nowadays the island gives you the chance to escape for some peace
and quiet. The island lies just off the Old Stone Town and is home to giant tortoises that
were imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. It is fringed with a
beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkeling, and has a lovely white beach for
sunbathing. The island is ideal for a day trip with refreshments available
throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy
freshly caught fish.
Changuu is a small island with an intense history. It lies 3 ½ miles to
the northwest of the Stone Town of Zanzibar and it is oblong in shape about ½ mile long and
250 yards broad at the widest point. All over the island, there are a number of coral pits,
which are disused quarries from digging coral for building on Zanzibar Stone Town along
the centuries. One large quarry site at the back side of the island is used as a
natural swimming pool at which it is not unusual to swim with Green and
Hawksbill sea turtles. You want to have a night here?
