Beach Holidays in Pemba Island
The island of Pemba, known as 'Al Jazeera Al Khadra'
(the green island) in Arabic, is an island forming part of the Zanzibar archipelago, lying off the
east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Pemba rises from the Indian Ocean on its own granite
pedestal, a continental landmass in itself, topped with verdant hillscapes that tumble
through clove plantations to the signatory, pristine white beaches. The reefs and
channels make for East Africa's finest diving and highly rated game fishing,
whilst the Pembans themselves embody the coastal Swahili in their
dignity of manner and refinement of welcome. Pemba is, with
the exception of a strip of land along its east coast,
a very fertile place.
The Island lies 50 kilometres east of mainland Tanzania, across the Pemba
Channel. Together with Mafia Island (south of Zanzibar), these three islands form the Spice
Islands (not to be confused with the Maluku Islands of Indonesia). The most important
towns in Pemba are Chake-Chake (the capital), Mkoani, and Wete, the largest city.
The centrally located Chake-Chake is perched on a hill with a view to the
west on a bay and the tiny Misali island.
